Use Maru with an assistant

Connect an assistant to hosted work or use developer tools for local projects.

Connect an assistant to your Maru account for hosted tools, or set up local developer tools when you want it to edit files on your computer. These connections do different jobs; signing in to Maru does not give an assistant access to your local project folder.

Choose the connection

The Maru connector overview introduces the hosted connection for compatible assistants. MCP is a way for an assistant to discover and call tools. Hosted tools act on your Maru account after you sign in and approve access.

For local source editing, coding agents use a different setup with developer tools. That path is explained in the agent setup documentation.

The hosted connector offers the account and project actions listed by the connected client. Check that list for the task you want to perform. Editing and building local source use the local tools. Account connection does not synchronize a folder with Studio or give every assistant the same capabilities.

The Maru agent skill supplies workflow instructions; installed tools supply the actions. Desktop tools and helpers explains how those pieces fit together.

Give the assistant a clear task

Name the project, the result you want and any limits: for example, “Change this instrument's filter controls, keep its presets and do not publish it.” Review the changed files or project in its editor. Ask the assistant what it saved and where to find the result; a description of a change is not a saved project.

Review access and spending

Read the requested permissions and grant access appropriate to the task. Some hosted operations can consume credits. Follow connected apps and generation and credits before enabling those actions.

If the assistant cannot do the task

Check that you chose the hosted or local connection the task needs, that the assistant sees Maru's tools and that you granted the requested access. The MCP guide covers connection details. If the connection still fails, contact support with the assistant client, connection type and error message, without credentials. Developer concepts helps you choose a guide for building an instrument or connecting an application.
