# Playback, audio and MIDI

> Check inputs, output and browser access when a tool makes no sound.

If a tool is silent, begin with the simplest question: what should make it play? An instrument needs notes or a sequence; an effect needs audio to process.

## Check playback and output

Start the available playback control and check that the page is not muted. Keep the listening level comfortable. Confirm the output device and the computer's volume, then try a known preset or example.

For an effect, confirm that an input is selected and running. If a meter moves but you hear nothing, check the output path before changing the effect's sound settings.

## Check MIDI access

First try the on-screen keys or pads, if offered. If they play but your MIDI keyboard does not, check MIDI input rather than changing the instrument's sound.

Where the host offers MIDI input, select your device and approve the browser's request when you want to use it. Browser and device support varies. If MIDI is unavailable, use the page's on-screen controls or another offered input method. A computer keyboard supplies notes only on pages that support it; move focus out of text fields before trying to play.

## Check the environment

A tool can behave differently in a browser and an installed plugin host. Follow [DAW integration](https://maruaudio.com/help/daw-integration.md) for an installed release, or return to [using plugins](https://maruaudio.com/help/plugins-overview.md) to check its input requirements.

## Report a problem

Send [support](https://maruaudio.com/contact#help) the product, browser or DAW, operating system, input method and visible error. Say whether playback starts and whether meters move. Remove private project material and credentials from screenshots or logs.
