New modules start under the Maru Remix License, version 1.0
(`maru-remix-1.0`). Studio and `maru create` show it at creation, and you can
pick another licence at any time before or after you publish.

## What anyone on Maru may do

- **Remix the module on Maru.** Open it in Studio, change it, and publish the
  remix to their profile.
- **Use it to make music.** Audio, MIDI and presets you make with any module
belong to you, including for commercial releases. The licence covers the
module, not what you make with it.

## What a remix keeps

- **Credit, automatically.** Every remix links to the module it came from,
and Maru keeps the full lineage on the module page. A remix cannot remove
  or hide that link.
- **The same licence.** A remix of a Maru Remix License module is published
  under the Maru Remix License.

## What it does not allow

- Redistributing the source or the built module outside Maru, unless the
author grants that separately or picks an open licence such as MIT or
  CC-BY-4.0.
- Removing credit or presenting someone else's module as your own.

## Choosing something else

Pick **All rights reserved** or **Proprietary download** to switch remixing
off. Open licences (CC0, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-BY-NC, MIT, Apache-2.0) also
allow remixing under their own terms, including outside Maru.

This is not the plug-in licence that decides which computers can open a paid
plug-in; that is described in [Plug-in licensing](https://maruaudio.com/docs/plugin-licensing.md).

## Open questions before 1.0 is final

- Whether a remix of a paid module may be sold, and whether a share of a paid
remix's revenue goes to the modules it came from.
- Whether a remix may be published privately or must stay public.
- Whether the author may withdraw remix permission for future remixes, while
  existing remixes keep theirs.
